Early Life and Education
Siviwe Gwarube was born on 14 July 1989 in KwaMdingi, King William’s Town, South Africa, where she was raised by her grandmother. She attended Kingsridge High School for Girls before pursuing higher education at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. At Rhodes University, she earned a BA degree in Law, Politics, and Philosophy, laying the foundation for her career in public service and politics.
Career
Early Career and Entry into Politics
Gwarube began her career in communications, initially working in the office of the then-Leader of the Opposition, Lindiwe Mazibuko, in 2012. She later assumed the role of Head of Ministry at the Western Cape Department of Health under Provincial Minister Nomafrench Mbombo. Her experience in communications and governance prepared her for a leadership role within the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Parliamentary Journey
Siviwe Gwarube was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) on 22 May 2019. Shortly after her induction, she was appointed as the Shadow Minister of Health by DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane on 5 June 2019, a role she continued under subsequent leaders. Her tenure as Shadow Minister of Health was marked by her role as the DA’s spokesperson on COVID-19 during the pandemic, where she played a crucial role in advocating for health policies and responses.
In November 2020, Gwarube assumed additional responsibilities as the National Spokesperson of the Democratic Alliance, a position she held until August 2022.
