The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has officially commenced payments for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for the month of April 2025. This grant, valued at R370, provides essential support to unemployed individuals who meet the required eligibility criteria.
Approved applicants will receive their grant payments between 25 April and 30 April 2025. If you’re an SRD beneficiary, it’s important to complete a Sassa status check to view your exact payment date.
“Clients are encouraged to view their status on the SRD websites for the exact date that payment will be reflected in their bank accounts,” says Sassa.

Once Sassa processes the payment, beneficiaries are advised to allow 2 to 3 working days for the funds to reflect in their bank accounts.
Where to Collect Your SRD Grant in April 2025
Beneficiaries have two options for collecting their SRD grant:
- Direct Bank Deposit – The safest and fastest way to receive your grant.
- Supermarket Collection – Collect your cash grant from authorised retailers, including:
- Pick n Pay
- Boxer
- Checkers
- USave
- OK
- Spar
Sassa advises beneficiaries not to rush to collection points on the first day, as the funds will remain available once paid.
How SRD Grant Applications Are Evaluated
The SRD grant approval process includes several verification steps:
- Personal Information Verification
Your ID number, name, and surname are checked with the Department of Home Affairs. - Financial Checks
Sassa reviews your financial situation by checking your ID against:- South African Revenue Service (SARS)
- Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF)
- National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
- Fraud Risk Scoring
Both your ID and cellphone number undergo fraud risk assessment to ensure application legitimacy.
If your application is rejected in error, you can submit a formal SRD grant appeal through the Sassa website.
SRD Grant Extended Until March 2026
In the 2025 Budget Speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed that the SRD grant has been extended by one year, with a new end date of March 2026. The government has allocated R35.2 billion for the continuation of the grant.
“The COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD), in its current form, will be extended by a year to end March 2026,” said Minister Godongwana.
