ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – CANON COLLINS & TOM QUEBA MEMORIAL FUND

Since 1981, the Canon Collins Trust has been dedicated to supporting scholars from southern African countries. With over 4,000 beneficiaries from 14 countries, the Trust offers undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for studies in South Africa, the UK, Ireland, and Malawi.

Tom Queba, a respected leader in the George taxi industry who passed away in 2014, was known for his commitment to improving public transport and the minibus taxi industry. The Tom Queba Memorial Fund and the Tom Queba Engineering Scholarship for Social Change were established in his memory to continue his legacy of social betterment.

ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS TOM QUEBA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

In partnership with the Tom Queba Memorial Fund and Pegasys, the Canon Collins Trust invites students to apply for the Scholarship for Social Change for the 2025 academic year. Scholarships are available for Honours and Masters studies in fields related to social change, including:

  • Education
  • Humanities and the Arts
  • Justice
  • Sciences and Applied Sciences

This programme aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive social change in their communities.

SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE AND SELECTION CRITERIA

The scholarship offers a financial award of R85,000, covering up to two years of study. Additionally, recipients will participate in events designed to enhance their academic and leadership abilities. Selection is based on several criteria:

  • Academic merit and record
  • Financial need
  • Potential contribution to southern African societies
  • Future impact and leadership potential
  • Alignment with the Trust’s priorities

Shortlisted candidates will be notified via email and invited to interviews between October and November 2024. Successful applicants will be announced in December 2024.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a black African or coloured South African national residing in South Africa
  • Have completed a first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or be graduating in 2024
  • Be studying or intend to study towards an Honours or Masters qualification in one of the specified fields
  • Be studying or have applied to study at a South African university (full-time, part-time, or via distance learning)
  • Willing to participate in annual conferences and events
  • The proposed study must contribute to social or environmental development and improve the lives of South Africa’s poorest communities

Applicants need to submit the following documents:

  • ID document, Birth Certificate, Passport, or Driver’s License
  • Proof of refugee status (if applicable)
  • Degree certificates (if available)
  • Certified copies of academic transcripts
  • Two latest payslips (if employed)
  • PhD proposal (if applicable)

Shortlisted candidates will need to provide two reference letters and a supporting statement from their supervisor (if applying for PhD study). Ideally, one reference should be from the current or most recent academic supervisor and one from an employer. If not employed, voluntary work references or two academic references are acceptable.

CLOSING DATE

The application deadline is 22 July 2024 at 15:00 GMT (17:00 South African time). Late applications will not be accepted, so ensure you apply before the closing date.
