About the Gerda Henkel Stiftung Foundation – Lisa Maskell Scholarship Programme
The Lisa Maskell Scholarship, in collaboration with Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, invites applications for full-time PhD studies in Historical Humanities. This includes fields like Archaeology, Art History, Historical Islamic Studies, History, History of Law, History of Science, Prehistory, and Early History. Additionally, research topics within cultural studies, political science, and social sciences that address contemporary issues in a larger historical context are also eligible.
The scholarship offers a maximum value of R450,000 over three years, with additional research support costs amounting to R62,000.
Eligibility Requirements for the Lisa Maskell Scholarship
To be eligible for the Lisa Maskell Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be from an African country
- Not older than 35 years old
- Completed a full MA research thesis
- Intend to study full-time towards a PhD in one of the listed Historical Humanities fields
- Able to commence studies in February 2025
- Apply to study at Stellenbosch University within the Graduate School of the Arts and Social Science Faculty
- Must contact the relevant department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and obtain a letter of recommendation confirming supervisory capacity
- Have an excellent academic record
- Achieved a minimum result of 70% in the final year of the most recent degree completed
- Preference will be given to students from PANGeA partner institutions
