About the Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund (LPFF)
Formerly known as the Attorneys Fidelity Fund (AFF), the LPFF protects the public from financial loss due to the theft of trust funds. Its primary mission is to reimburse clients who suffer monetary losses when their entrusted funds are stolen by attorneys. The fund also encourages public trust in legal practitioners by serving as a fidelity guarantee.
Who Can Apply?
The LPFF Bursary Programme is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate law students. Here’s a breakdown:
Undergraduate Students
- Eligibility: South African citizens or permanent residents who have completed Matric and are currently in their 2nd or 3rd year of LLB studies at a recognized South African university.
- Coverage: Funding is provided for the final 2 years of LLB studies.
Postgraduate Students
- Eligibility: South African citizens or permanent residents who have completed an undergraduate law degree (such as BA (Law), B Comm (Law), B Iuris, B Proc, or a 4-year LLB) and are practicing attorneys or candidate attorneys.
- Coverage: Funding aims to enhance professional standards for practicing or candidate attorneys.
What Does the Bursary Cover?
The amount covered by the bursary is determined annually by the Minister of Justice and is applied towards tuition fees. Successful applicants will be notified in writing and must accept or decline the award within 6 months of receiving the offer.

For Undergraduate Students
- Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Must have completed Matric.
- Must be in their 2nd or 3rd year of LLB studies.
- Must be studying at an accredited South African university.
- Must agree to the rules of the bursary as outlined in the application form.
- Preference is given to students with financial need and a strong academic record.
For Postgraduate Students
- Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Must have completed Matric.
- Must hold an appropriate undergraduate law qualification.
- Must be a practicing attorney or candidate attorney.
- Must be studying at an accredited South African university.
