Biography

Darlington Michaels (1946 – 13 September 2024) was a renowned South African actor celebrated for his role as Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela in the long-running SABC3 soap opera Isidingo, where he starred from 1998. Born on a farm in Johannesburg, Michaels grew up in a humble environment and pursued his studies in the city. Though he didn’t receive formal acting training, he quickly rose to prominence through sheer talent and dedication.

His portrayal of “Papa G,” a flamboyant, streetwise gangster from the fictional mining town Horizon Deep, made him a household name. For nearly two decades, he entertained South African audiences with his sharp wit, humor, and charm. His signature Tsotsitaal (a South African street dialect) and flashy silk shirts, often accessorized with chunky gold rings, became synonymous with the character.

Before joining Isidingo, Michaels worked on the stage, debuting under the mentorship of legendary playwright Gibson Kente. One of his most significant stage roles came in the 1984 play Survival, which addressed the harsh conditions of apartheid prisons. His acting career extended into numerous television roles, including appearances in Chandies, The Road, Vula Vala, and How to Ruin Christmas.

In 2013, Michaels faced a significant health challenge when he suffered a stroke, forcing him to step away from the limelight for a time. However, the veteran actor made a remarkable recovery and returned to TV screens in 2020, starring in the Mzansi Magic series Vula Vala.

His final years were spent enjoying the admiration and respect of a legion of fans who loved his work. Darlington passed away on 13 September 2024, following a brief illness. The cause of death was not disclosed. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) paid tribute to Michaels, calling him a “legendary” figure whose contribution to the industry will be long remembered.

He is survived by his wife, two children, six grandchildren, friends, and countless fans, all of whom mourn his passing and celebrate his legacy in South African television.
