The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of six suspects, aged between 23 and 58, during an Operation Vala Umgodi clampdown across all five districts in Limpopo Province on Monday, 5 May 2025. The arrests stem from ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining activities and enforce immigration laws.
Mopani District: Sand Mining Crackdown
In the Mokwakwaila Policing area near Mirikomo-Mawa Block 14, an intelligence-driven operation led to the discovery of a group of individuals engaged in illegal sand mining. Upon being approached, the suspects fled in various directions. Police managed to arrest two suspects, aged 23 and 29.

Capricorn District: Suspect Caught Mining Without Permit
In Mohodi Village, Senwabarwana Policing area, officers arrested a 42-year-old man caught mining without a valid permit. Police also confiscated a yellow TLB (tractor-loader-backhoe) and a white FAW truck believed to be used in the illegal operation.
Vhembe District: Immigration Offenders Nabbed
In the Waterpoort Policing area, three suspects aged 36 to 58 were apprehended for contravening the Immigration Act. The individuals are currently being processed, and deportation procedures may follow pending court outcomes.
Court Appearances Pending
All suspects are expected to appear before their respective Magistrates’ Courts in the coming days. SAPS has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and further arrests may follow.
“Operation Vala Umgodi is focused on disrupting illegal mining syndicates, seizing equipment, and enforcing immigration laws to protect our natural resources and national security,” said SAPS.
