NSFAS Confirms Delays in 2024 TVET Allowance Payments — Special Payment Run Set for 31 May 2025

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has confirmed that some students at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges are still waiting for their 2024 allowance payments. The delay, the scheme says, is due to technical challenges experienced during the transition of its direct payment system.

What Caused the Delay?

In 2024, NSFAS ended its contracts with external direct payment service providers and moved to a model where student allowances are paid directly into personal bank accounts. While the shift was aimed at reducing payment delays, NSFAS acknowledged that the transition introduced complexities that led to delays in processing some student allowances.

“The unpaid allowances are a result of complexities arising from the move to direct payment partners and the subsequent return of this payment function to NSFAS during the 2024 academic year,” the agency stated.

Which Allowances Are Affected?

The delays specifically affect students who were meant to receive 2024 allowances for:

  • Food
  • Accommodation
  • Learning materials

These allowances are part of NSFAS’s comprehensive support package, which also covers tuition and registration fees for qualifying students at public universities and TVET colleges.

Key Payment Dates to Note

NSFAS has now set the following final timelines to resolve the issue:

  • Monthly TVET allowances for 2025 will be paid on 25 May 2025
  • Outstanding 2024 allowances will be processed in a special payment run on 31 May 2025

“NSFAS is in the final stages of the reconciliation process and remains committed to fulfilling its obligations,” the statement read.

Why This Matters

For thousands of TVET students, these allowances are vital for day-to-day survival — covering rent, food, and other essential needs. The delay has placed financial strain on many, especially those still waiting for funding that should have been paid last year.

NSFAS assured affected students that resolving this backlog is a top priority, and efforts are underway to avoid similar issues in the future.

“We are committed to working collaboratively with the TVET College sector to address systemic challenges and ensure the efficient disbursement of funds,” NSFAS added.

What Should Students Do?

  • Note the payment dates (25 May for 2025 allowances; 31 May for 2024 backlogs)
  • Monitor your bank account for incoming payments
  • NSFAS has not provided further tracking steps but is expected to share updates on www.nsfas.org.za and its official social media channels
