The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Lydenburg has arrested seven suspects, aged 30 to 59, following a dramatic shootout and a series of threats allegedly linked to a business rivalry involving tenders and alleged plans to attack a police station.
Suspected Plot to Eliminate Business Rival and Threaten Police
According to police reports, a local businessman received death threats on the morning of Tuesday, 6 May 2025, from a businessman based in Gauteng. The alleged threat claimed the local man was a “stumbling block” to tender opportunities in Lydenburg.
The situation escalated when a Lydenburg police officer—who was investigating the businessman’s complaint—also received threats. The suspect reportedly warned that the Lydenburg police station would be attacked and the officer’s life would not be spared.
Armed Group Storms Residences, Gunfire Erupts
Later that evening at around 18:00, five armed vehicles reportedly stormed the residence of a local councillor, but no one was home. The group then moved to the businessman’s home, where they forced entry and were met by private security guards. A gunfight ensued.
Lydenburg SAPS members responded swiftly and arrested seven suspects at the scene. One of the attackers sustained injuries and is currently under police guard in hospital.
Weapons and Vehicles Seized
During the operation, police confiscated:
- 3 vehicles
- 8 assault handguns
- 1 assault rifle
- Over 400 rounds of ammunition
Charges and Investigation
The suspects face charges including attempted murder, intimidation, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. More charges may be added as investigations continue.
They are expected to appear in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
SAPS Commends Swift Action
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised both the security guards and police officers for their rapid and coordinated response:
“We cannot allow anarchy and lawlessness to prevail. Those who engage in such behaviour will face the full might of the law,” he warned.
