The Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) has made significant strides in the ongoing battle against organized crime with the arrest of 16 suspects across Eldorado Park, Sophiatown, Booysens, Florida, and Mondeor between 28 April and 4 May 2025. The coordinated, intelligence-driven operations targeted gang activity, illegal firearms, and drug trafficking.
Key Arrests and Seizures
Firearm-Related Arrests:
- Three suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, thanks to community tip-offs and AGU tactical interventions.
Drug Offences:
- Five suspects in Eldorado Park, four in Sophiatown, and one in Florida were arrested for possession of suspected illegal substances.
- An additional two suspects in Eldorado Park and two in Mondeor were arrested for dealing in drugs.
Confiscated Items:
- 2 unlicensed firearms
- Live ammunition
- Over 1,200 Mandrax tablets
- 147 grams of suspected Crystal Meth
- 35 grams of Cat
- Undisclosed amount of cash, suspected to be drug proceeds
“The success of these operations is a testament to the commitment and resilience of our AGU members. We are focused on disrupting the drug trade and removing illegal firearms from our communities,” said Brigadier Maphoto, Commander of the Anti-Gang Unit.
Court Appearances and Ongoing Investigations
All arrested individuals have since appeared in their respective magistrates’ courts, and investigations remain ongoing as SAPS works to dismantle the broader criminal networks behind these crimes.
