43 Suspects Arrested During Vala Umgodi Operations in North West Province

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has intensified efforts to combat illegal mining and related crimes under the ongoing Vala Umgodi operation in the North West Province. Between 29 April and 2 May 2025, a total of 43 suspects—mainly illegal immigrants—were arrested in Sun City, Mogwase, and Tlhabane.

Targeted Arrests Across Key Villages

Ledig Village (Sun City):
On Tuesday, 13 suspects were taken into custody for being in the country illegally. Two South African men, both aged 29, received R1500 fines each for hiring undocumented foreign nationals, violating Section 38(1)(b) of the Immigration Act.

Bojating Village (Mogwase):
On Thursday, 17 men aged between 18 and 42 were arrested for contravening immigration laws. Police also confiscated a generator, battery, and shovel, indicating illegal mining activity.

Tlhabane and Boitekong (Geelhout Park & Extension 9):
Friday saw the arrest of 13 more men, aged 20 to 47. Among them:

  • A 44-year-old was found with a dangerous weapon.
  • Two others, aged 42 and 25, were arrested for drug possession.
  • Confiscated substances included cocaine and dagga.

All suspects are set to appear in the Bafokeng and Mankwe Magistrates’ Courts. The arrested individuals hail from several countries, including Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Ethiopia, Swaziland, Nigeria, and Lesotho.

SAPS Sounds Alarm on Cross-Border Crime

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng expressed deep concern over the rising involvement of foreign nationals in serious crimes:

“The continuous arrest of undocumented foreign nationals for crimes such as drug dealing, unlicensed firearms, illegal mining, and livestock theft is a direct threat to our national security, the economy, and the rule of law.”

He emphasized the need for multi-agency collaboration, calling on the SANDF, Home Affairs, Border Management Authority, Customs (SARS), DMRE, DPCI, and NPA to work closely with SAPS in tackling cross-border criminal networks.

Why This Matters

The Vala Umgodi operation is more than just a crackdown on illegal mining—it’s a nationwide effort to preserve South Africa’s sovereignty, economic stability, and public safety. As arrests continue, community vigilance and intergovernmental cooperation will be crucial in securing lasting results.
